Introduction about Endosufan tragedy

During the early part of the 1980s, the cashew development board of both Karnataka and Kerala had undertaken aerial and hand spray of endosulfan pesticide to control the pest of cashew plantation coming under their respective jurisdiction and it had an adverse effect on human beings residing around the plantation area. Most of the people lost their active parts of the body and mental balance too. The newborn babies also got severely affected making them totally inactive and immobile. 17,470 numbers of people are identified as endosulfan pesticide affected victims in Uttara Kannada, Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts of coastal Karnataka State. In Uttara Kannada District there are 1703 (128 are dead in total 1831) people living in remote village areas are identified as endosulfan pesticide affected victims in 6 Taluks namely Bhatkal, Kumta, Honnavara, Ankola, Sirsi and Siddapura, by Government of Karnataka. The percentage of disability as calculated by the medical experts are- 25-50% 508, 51-75% 675, 76-95% 489, more than 95%. One can imagine the disaster caused by the endosulfan pesticide spray and the socio-economic damage made on mankind. The life of Victims and their family members are miserable in all aspects due to lack of care and facilities which needs to be looked into. From February 2018 SCODWES is running 4 well equipped Mobile medical unit services for multiple disorder persons affected by endosulfan pesticide at Sirsi & Siddapura, Kumta & Ankola, Honnavara, and Bhatkala taluks of Uttara Kannada District. These units provide free door services to these 1703 beneficiaries with physiotherapy treatment.
